1)  Can we  reduce  weight  by  fasting?

Our  body  requires energy  for  basic  functions  of  vital  organs.  Foods  provides  us  with  this  energy. But to reduce we have to restrict  fats (oil) and sugar (sweet).

2)  What foods   should  be avoided  to reduce  weight ?

  • Fried  foods

  • Sweets  and  sugars.

  • Cakes, pastries, ice creams and desserts.

  • Aerated  drinks  and  junk  foods.

3) Do extra  fluid  intake  lead  to  weight  gain?

No, but aerated  drinks  and  sweetened juices  should  be  avoided.

4) Is every things the cause of  obesity? How can  it  be  avoided?

Yes, but smaller  and  nutrition's  feeds  at  frequent  inter  vals (ie. 3hourly  gap) will help  to  avoid  overeating.

5) Does  consumption  of  fruits /sweets  lead  to  diabetes?

No, fruits  generally  contains  fructose  not  sucrose  so  this  concept  is  not true. But after  40  years we must avoid  sweet and sugar.

6) Does  rice  contains  sugar?

There  is  no  concept   as ' sugar"  in rice.  Only  starch  content is  more  compared to wheat.

7) To  control ,blood sugar how many feeds a day  is recommended?

3 small and 3 large feeds  at  every 2hourly interval (ie. one small one large and so on.)

8) Should  diabetes avoid chutney's, papad and pickles ?

Yes, as these have a  high sodium content.

9) Should  diabetes  have   fruit juices  instead  of  fruits?

No, they  should  have  whole  fruit  as  fruit  with  skin  have  a  higher  fibre  content.

10) Fruits to be avoided in diabetes?

Banana, custard  apple,  mango  and  chickoo, grapes.

11) Which  fruit can diabetes have every day?

Jamun(8-10), guava, orange (1  medium), papaya (1  slice), pineapple (one  piece),   apple (1medium), water  melon (1 slice- not  juice).

12) Which  foods  contains  cholesterol?

  • Meat

  • Chicken

  • Fish

  • Egg

  • Milk,  cheese, ice-creams, creams, butter ,cheese spread.

13) What are the oils preferred  in CVD?

Reduce  intake  of  animal  fats  and  take   more  of  vegetable  oils,  bringing  the  ratio  of  poly  unsaturated  fat  calories  to  about   half  the  total  fat  calories.  use  groundnut, sunflower,  corn, til  or  soya  oil, with   mustered oil.

Recommendation : 1  til  oil + mustered  oil  or  (2)  Groundnut +  mustered  oil   or  (3) soyabean  oil

14) Which  foods  can  be  consumed  liberally  after  40  years  of  age?

  • Salads :  because  these  are  rich  sources  of vitamin, minerals, complex cho, vit c, iron, folic acid and carotinoids

  • Fruits   : because  these  are  rich  sources  of vitamine, minerals, complex cho, vit c, iron,folic acid and  carotinoids.

  • Soups

  • Whole   grams  and  whole  cereal's

15) Which fruits can renal (kidney) patients take?

Apple, Guava, Papaya, Pineapple & ber (one slice).

16)  What is the fluid restriction in renal patients?

Fluids should be restricted as per the doctors recommendations which are

17) Foods with high iron contents to be given during pregnancy?

Plant foods like legumes, dried fruits and green leafy vegetables contain iron : Almonds, cashew, dates, til, Rice flakes, Iron is also obtained through meat, fish and poultry, products.

18) How are vegetables leached for renal diet?

Cut the vegetables into small pieces and boil in the large amount of water for 5 minutes. Throw the water and wash the vegetable in fresh and clean water and then prepare the vegetable.

19) How can we avoid the loss of vitamins and minerals during the cooking process?

  • Do not wash food grains repeatedly before cooking.

  • Do not wash vegetables after cutting.

  • Do not soak the cut vegetables in water for long periods.

  • Do not discard the excess water left over after cooking.

  • Cook foods in vessels covered with lids.

  • Prefer pressure / steam cooking to deep frying / roasting.

  • Encourage consumption of sprouted / fermented foods/combination of cereal + pulses.

  • Avoid use of soda while cooking pulses and vegetables.

  • Do not heat the left over oil repeatedly.

20)  Why should we restrict intake of processed foods?

Frequent consumption of processed food will depress appetite, affect intake of nutrients, and increase the risk of exposure to various chemicals addictives.
