The department has got OPD (Out Patients Department) IPD (In Patient Department) MICU (Medical Intensive Care Unit). Respective  unit consultants daily manage hospital In Patients and the MICU patients.  The consultant of respective unit on duty attends emergency medical services.

OPD (Out Patient Department)

The department has well established out patient department where the patients coming with various medical disorders are examined by consultant physicians on all working days from 9 am to 1 pm & 3 pm to 5 pm. Depending on the clinical diagnosis, patients are relevantly investigated and are advised treatment and further follow-up on OPD basis. If the patient's disease requires expert opinion of various super-specialities according referred to concerned specialty like. Cardiology. Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Immunology, Neurology, Gen Surgery patients are accordingly referred to concerned specialty. If the patient requires further work-up for diagnostic evaluation and requires institute care for therapeutic purposes to treat with drugs with proper monitoring and nursing care the patients are admitted in the hospital.

IPD (In Patient Department)

In-patients are examined by consultants and are investigated depending upon the clinical diagnosis. The patients are treated with the medicines following principles of evidence based medicine and cost-effectiveness. If patients require the recent advances, information, therapeutic protocols, Medline Search is made for the best available evidence.   Modality for management of needy patients in the Digital Library of J. N. Medical College. Belgaum.

The patients are followed-up by unit consultants twice daily. In patient bed strength General Ward category - 180 beds Semiprivate - Private -       .

Types of patients treated in OPD & IPD

Respiratory:

Pulmonary tuberculosis. COPD. Respiratory infections (Upper & Lower respiratory tract infection. Bronchiectasis. Bronchial Asthma. Carcinoma Bronchus etc.,

Cardiovascular:

Hypertension, IHD. CHD,

Gastroenterology:

Malabsorption syndrome, IBS. Acute and Chronic Diarrhoea, Chronic Diarrhoea. Inflammatory Bowel disease. Acid peptic disease. Viral hepatitis. Acute and chronic liver disease. Cirrhosis of liver, Hepatoma etc.,

Renal Diseases:

Acute and Chronic Glumerulonephritis, Chronic, Chronic Renal Failure Secondary to Hypertension and Diabetes, Nephrotic syndrome etc.,

Endocrinal Diseases:

Myxoedema. Cretinism. Hyperthyroidism, Diabetes mellitus. Cushing's syndrome. Conn's Syndrome etc..

Hematological Diseases:

Anaemias like Iron deficiency anaemia . Dimorphic anemia, hemolytic anemia. A plastic anemia Myelodysplastic Syndrome. Pancytopenia. Hematological malignancies like all Leukaemias and Lymphomas.

Dept. has taken up several research activities.

Faculty members have presented research papers in state level, National, International Levels.  Community out-reach programmes conducted by the department.

The department regularly conducts Health Check-up camps under the KLE Hospital & Medical Research Centre & J. N. Medical College, Belgaum.

At present has 6 units in KLE Hospital & MRC, Belgaum with 6 Professors, 7 Asso-Professors, 6 Asst-Professors, 7 Sr. Registrar / Lecturers & 24 Registrar/Residents.
